Match 42 of the Indian Premier League sees the Punjab Kings play against the new franchise to the tournament, the Lucknow Super Giants, at the Maharashtra Cricket Association in Pune. Both teams are hovering close to the middle of the table, so a win here would be a helpful push to get that bit closer to the top of the leaderboard. We have seen a history of checkerboard wins from the two teams, with both still failing to find a comfortable footing within the tournament. So, which team will be able to clinch the victory and continue their recent winning streak?

Check out the leading IPL betting sites for the best odds for any in-play wagers you might want to place, get ready for all the action starting from 19:30 IST, and cross your fingers for another memorable moment in an already action-packed season. Let’s get the (cricket) ball rolling and jump straight into our team previews before we share who we predict will win!

Punjab Kings Team Preview

Sixth place Punjab Kings currently have four wins and four losses to their name and a net run rate of -0.419. They seem to have turned a corner, putting an end to their streak of defeats, and are celebrating their most recent win against the Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs.

We saw some brilliant bowling from the squad in which Kagiso Rabada and Rishi Dhawan both took two wickets each, while Sandeep Sharma and Arshdeep Singh managed to take a wicket apiece. The Kings got off to a terrific start in the Powerplay from Sharma and Dhawan, with Rabada, Singh, and again Dharwan stepping up in the death overs. Rabada managed to take the wicket of Ambati Rayudu and put an end to his dangerous bowling attack in which he managed to finish with a total of 78 runs from 39 balls.

The Punjab batters showed consistency and managed to keep the momentum up throughout the game. Liam Livingstone had an incredible strike rate of 271.43 after scoring 19 runs from 7 balls, however it was Shikhar Dhawan that was the star of the show as he added the bulk of the runs to Punjab’s total, scoring 88 from 58 balls, and deservedly won the Player of the Match award. Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 42 runs form 32 balls, while skipper Mayank Agarwal scored 18 runs from 21 balls.

Our IPL prediction for top batsman would have to be Livingstone. After smashing two 6’s and a four, it’s clear that he’s on-form and hopefully ready to get another big score on the board. Lucknow Super Giants Team Preview

The Lucknow Super Giants have won five matches out of the eight they have played, which of course nets them 10 points. As three other teams are also on 10 points at the time of writing (Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore), it comes down to the net run rate to help distinguish them further. With a positive run rate of 0.334, this places the Super Giants in fourth place, and third best in the four-strong '10 point group’.

They sailed to a convincing 36 run victory over the Mumbai Indians and are hopefully back on to a winning track. Skipper K L Rahul was absolutely deserving for the Player of the Match award after he sailed to his second century of the tournament. His 103 runs were off 62 balls not out, consisting of twelve 4’s and four 6’s, for a strike rate of 166.13. Rahul’s lone performance was certainly the backbone of Match 37, in which the team reached 168. However, the warm afterglow of the wins could have been marred slightly as he was handed a second fine for Rs 24 lakh (double the first fine) for slow over rates.

Out of the remaining 65 runs, Manish Pandey went run-for-run for a total of 22, Ayush Badoni scored 14 from 11 balls, and Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda both scored 10 runs from 9 balls. Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder both failed to score any runs over 5 balls between them.

The bowling performance was fairly strong, with Dushmantha Chameera standing head and shoulders above the rest. In Chameera’s four overs spell, he only conceded 14 runs for a fantastic economy of 3.50. Krunal Pandya managed to take three wickets while conceding 19 runs for an economical spell coming in just under 5. Mohsin Khan, Jason Holder, Ravi Bishnoi, and Badoni all took a wicket each.

We will round off this team preview with our choice for top batsmen if you are considering online cricket betting for this match. We are all hoping for another fantastic performance from Rahul, however looking at his history, it might be that he needs this match to recharge before another big score. Despite this, we will still back him in our match prediction today.

Toss Prediction

Only one team has decided to break the mould when it comes to the toss decision. This break from the current trend of 'win the toss, bat second' paid off for the Gujarat Titans who sealed a win over the Kolkata Knight Riders by eight runs. However, this decision to bat first is something that we are not confident will be widespread in this season of the IPL. Therefore, our toss prediction will continue in the same fashion that we have seen and confidently back the winning captain to bat second.

Pitch Conditions

There has been a little less action at the Maharashtra Cricket Association, Pune in the last week or so of the IPL 2022. This will be the fourth match to be played here in two weeks. The MCA wicket is a batter-friendly wicket and fairly conducive to a high scoring game, which is echoed in the average first innings score of 176.7. This bumps up by nearly 20 more wickets for the average first innings winning score. The black-soil pitch provides a good amount of bounce, which is favourable to spin bowling.

The forecast for the Friday game is slightly cooler that what we’ve previously seen, with a ‘real-feel’ temperature of 39C. Interestingly, the humidity at 34%, is one of the lowest that we’ve seen in the tournament so far. This could perhaps limit the amount of dew forming as the evening match progresses and reduce the advantage that most chasing squads have been enjoying.

Our Betting Tips

Who are you backing for the match today? Our IPL prediction of who will win this match is the Lucknow Super Giants. If the Punjab Kings manage to get a couple of early wickets like they did in their match against the Chennai Super Kings, things could get a little rocky for Lucknow. However, we are banking on another huge total from Rahul and for the momentum to continue through to the middle order, which is well within their reach.
