Our match prediction

The race for the playoffs in the 2021 Indian Premier League is heating up and us fans are in for a right feast. This has already been an up and down season for most of the teams, and it will get a lot more intense from here on in. Five of the eight teams are still battling it out for third and fourth spot, which is great for us fans. The next match to be played sees the Rajasthan Royals take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and a win could go a long way for the victor. What is our IPL prediction for who will win? Read on and all will be revealed.

Rajasthan Royals Team Preview

Just when it looked like the Rajasthan Royals had the opportunities to get ahead in the tense race for a playoff spot, they bottled it badly. With four wins out or nine matches, they looked well set to occupy fourth spot, but a shock loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad has damaged their chances.

Like the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Rajasthan Royals have struggled with their consistency in the United Arab Emirates. As it stands, they have four wins from ten games and are sitting in sixth spot with eight points and a negative net run rate of -0.369. Not only do they now need to win their final matches, but they will also have to try and improve their net run rate to give them a little bit of extra cushion.

It is fair to say that injuries have not been kind to the Rajasthan Royals at all. They are now missing most of their first-choice overseas cricketers and this has had a clear negative impact on their performances. In their only win in the UAE, they were in a poor position for most of the match, but were helped out by a brain fade from the Punjabi Kings batsmen.

Like their performances, they have also been inconsistent with their selections. They have juggled their overseas contingent and have played some of their batsmen out of their favourite position. For example, Liam Livingstone has played in two different positions in the three games that he has played in. They also added Jaydev Unadka to the squad, and he is past it, in our humble opinion.

Overall, the Royals have a number of issues that they have to solve in order to pick up a much-needed win. There are some positives such as Sanju Samson's form with the bat, Mustafizur Rahman's consistent bowling, and Rahul Tewatia's bowling in the middle overs. We think they will make a couple of changes to their starting XI for this next match, and that is not going to help them settle.

Royal Challenges Bangalore Team Preview

The Royal Challengers Bangalore finally ended their terrible record in the UAE by defeating the Mumbai Indians in their last game. Now that they have a win to their name in the UAE, they will hope to use the momentum and turn it into a winning streak, something which no team has managed to do so far.

At this current moment, the Royal Challengers Bangalore are sitting in third spot, but they still need to claim two wins to be sure of a playoff spot, mostly due to their net run rate of -0.359. The started the second half of the 2021 IPL with a nine wicket thrashing by the Kolkata Knight Riders and followed this up with another heavy defeat versus the Chennai Super Kings. Just when things were getting tense, they bounced back against the Mumbai Indians to put themselves back in contention.

Glenn Maxwell batted himself back into form with 56 from 37 balls, while he also chipped in with a couple of wickets. Kona Srikar Bharat and Virat Kohli also got some much-needed runs under their belts, which will definitely do the team's confidence no harm. With this being said, there will still be some concerns over AB de Villiers as he is yet to hit the heights that he is known for.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore seemed to panic before their previous games which can be seen by the changes that they decided to make to their XI, and it will be pretty interesting to see who they choose for this vital match. Since they won the last game, we think the only change that might be made is bringing in Wanindu Hasaranga for Dan Christian or Kyle Jamieson, depending on the conditions.

Overall, they did a really good job to beat the Mumbai Indians, but they will probably need another strategy if they are to beat the Royals. If they can choose the correct playing XI, then there is no reason why they cannot go on to win.

Coin Toss

The captain who calls correctly during the coin toss will more than likely decide to bowl first since the team batting second at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium often have a small advantage over the team that bats first. The Rajasthan Royals won the toss at the last game to be played here and decided to bat first - they went on to lose. It really would be a surprise if the captain that wins the toss opts to bat first.

Pitch Conditions

The pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is one where fast bowlers have had quite a bit of success over the years. For instance, during the IPL 2020, the fast bowlers collected 180 wickets at this stadium, while the spinners got 94. This really is not a pitch that players should slog on, but those who play true cricket shots can pick up some runs. The team batting first will want to hit at least 170 as this is a pretty decent score on this wicket.

Our Match Prediction

With the playoffs soon upon us, the importance of this game cannot be emphasised enough. While a win here will put the winner firmly back in contention, the losers will struggle to make the playoffs. Taking a look at the recent form of these sides and their players, we feel that the Royal Challengers Bangalore have the advantage. They came out on top when these sides met last time, and this should help to boost their confidence.

Our match prediction: Royal Challengers Bangalore to win.
