🏆 Cricket World Cup Odds - Who Are the Three Favourites?
If you take a look at some of the top bookmakers for British cricket fans, you will see that the three favourites for the 2023 Cricket World Cup are India, England, and Australia. In the following table, you can see the Cricket World Cup odds that a handful of quality bookmakers are currently offering for these favourites:
Team | >||
---|---|---|
India | 3.25 | 2.95 |
England | 4.00 | 3.60 |
Australia | 5.00 | 4.75 |
1️⃣ India - Home Advantage
The 2023 edition of the ODI Cricket World Cup will take place in India, which will be a huge advantage for them. India are always a dangerous team, but they are even more so when they are playing at home. They showed this at the 2011 World Cup, which was hosted by India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. They played five of their six group matches in India, picking up four wins, a draw, and one defeat. They then played their quarter-final, semi-final, and final in India, and won each match relatively comfortably.
Not only will their players know the pitch conditions better than their opponents, but they will also have most of the stadium cheering them on to success when they are playing. Their squad is full of quality, and some players to keep a look out for include Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Ravi Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah.
[Bet on India to Win RWC]*
2️⃣ England - Strongest Squad
England are the defending champions and they, alongside their fans, will head into the World Cup full of confidence with the plan to retain the title that they earned in 2019. They have one of the most balanced and strongest squads in the competition, so even if they lose early wickets in a match, the quality just keeps on coming. With the likes of Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Dawid Malan, and Liam Livingstone in their ranks, they have the power to consistently score 350 plus.
Even if England are bowled out for an average score, then they will be confident about being able to defend it thanks to their skilled bowling attack. Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, and Adi Rashid, all have the pace, spin, and variation needed to cause the opposing batsmen a load of issues.
It will not be easy playing on subcontinent pitches, but many of these England players have some experience when it comes to playing in India thanks to regular series and the Indian Premier League.
3️⃣ Australia - Most Consistent Team
When it comes to big ICC events, Australia have shown the most consistency throughout the years. They have won the CWC a total of five times, including three times in a row between 1999 and 2007. Nowadays, they do not have the same aura as the Aussie team of the early 2000s, but they still have quality players, both in the batting and fielding department, that can win them an ODI match.
Some of their stars that can win them a game with the bat include David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Marsh. However, it is fair to say that their strongest department is their bowling attack which includes the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, and Pat Cummins.
In their last ODI series, they took on the Indians in India and won the series 2-1, so they know that they are capable of winning matches in subcontinent conditions. Then, earlier this year, they beat England 3-0, although it must be said that England did put out a much weakened side.
4️⃣ Pakistan - The Dark Horses
In different sports, there is always one team that is extremely unpredictable. One day they will put in a pretty embarrassing performance, and then just a few days later they will put in a showing that catches the eye. Pakistan are such a team and, although they are not one of the favourites, I think that they will do well in the tournament, and no team will be taking them lightly, that is for sure.
They have very talented batsmen in the shape of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Imam-Ul-Haq, while their bowling attack includes skilful bowlers such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usama Mir, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Wasim. When everything clicks for Pakistan, they can get on a roll that is very hard to stop. If you are looking to go against the bookmakers' favourites, then Pakistan are worth a look.

✔️ Cricket World Cup Betting Tips
Placing bets on the outright winner of big cricket events such as the World Cup is entertaining, but there are many other markets available which I will detail below. I'll also share my quality betting tips.
Match Winner
Ten teams will be playing at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, with a total of 48 games being played. For all of the matches, you will be able to place bets on the team that you think will win. What about draws? Well, in ODI cricket, unlike with Tests, draws are uncommon, so more often than not you will not find a draw betting option at your chosen sportsbook.
This is one of the simplest betting options for cricket, so those who are inexperienced cricket bettors should consider starting off with such a market. Experienced cricket bettors can try to cash in when they feel that the bookie's favourite could be on the end of an unexpected defeat.
Top Tip 1: The higher-ranked teams at the World Cup will usually beat those who had to qualify through a qualification tournament, but the great thing about such competitions is that there is always a chance of a couple of shock results. For example, the Netherlands will not be the favourites in any of their matches, but they have had success in the past against the big boys. They are improving all of the time, so they do have the potential to cause an upset or two.
Top Batsman
If you want a market that usually comes with some enticing odds, then I would recommend betting on the Top Batsman. With such a market, you are backing the player who will score the most runs for their side in the match. What you need to remember for this market is that if your chosen batsman does not bat, you do not get your stake back.
Top Tip 2: Check the form of the player that you want to bet on. If they are lacking, then I suggest backing someone else. Consider betting on those batsmen at the top of the order since they get to bat when fielding restrictions are in play, making scoring easier.
Top Tip 3: Who do I suggest you keep an eye on when it comes to such a market? Well, if England are playing, then the likes of Jos Buttler or Jonny Bairstow are good bets as they can destroy a bowling attack quickly in this format. If India are playing, then Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are known to go big. For Australia, Steven Smith, who bats at three, can be extremely hard to dismiss, so could be worth a bet.
Top Bowler
With such a market, what you need to do is predict the bowler that dismisses the most batsmen. The important factor for this market is wickets, not the number of runs conceded to wicket ratio. For example, if a bowler collects four scalps for 100 runs and another picks up three for just 40 runs, the former will be considered the top bowler.
Top Tip 4: The pitches in India will be dry and conducive to spin, so it will be wise to consider spin bowlers for such a market. Some of the spin bowlers that I recommend you keep a close eye on throughout the competition include Shakib Al Hasan, Adam Zampa, Rashid Khan. Yuzvendra Chahal, and Wanindu Hasaranga.
Handicap Betting
Handicap betting works differently in cricket than it does in other sports like football. For instance, in a game of football, the factor that determines the winner is the team that scores more goals. However, with cricket, matches can be won by a certain number of runs or wickets, depending on whether the winning team bats first or second. Thus, when it comes to handicap betting in cricket, you can give a team a hypothetical advantage or disadvantage for wickets or runs.
Handicap betting comes in handy when one team is believed to be vastly superior to their opponents. In such a scenario, the odds for the favourites will be really low, while putting cash on the underdog could be a big waste of money. By giving the favourites a disadvantage, you can make their odds more favourable. By giving the underdogs an advantage, you can increase the probability of them "winning".
Top Tip 5: India, due to their home advantage and the fact that they have top players, will be the bookmakers' favourite in most of their group matches, and I expect them to come out on top in most of them. Therefore, their odds to win will be low, so you might want to think about giving them a handicap disadvantage to make things more favourable for you.
Mode of Dismissal
In cricket, no matter the format being played, there will be a number of different ways that a batsman can be sent back to the pavilion. I have listed them below for you:
- Leg Before Wicket
- Caught
- Bowled
- Stumped
- Run out
- Hit wicket
- Obstructing the field
The best sportsbooks will give you the chance to bet on how the next batsman to get out will be dismissed. The options above all come with different odds as some are more common than others. For instance, getting out caught is the most common dismissal mode, which is why it will come with the shortest odds. Obstructing the field, on the other hand, is very uncommon, so the odds will be longer.
Top Tip 6: Before you bet on this market, find out how it is that certain batsmen tend to be dismissed and whether they have a bowler who they always struggle against. Some batsmen have a habit of nicking the ball to the keeper or slips, while others tend to be done by LBW. There are probably plenty of England fans who earned a nice profit by betting on Stuart Broad to dismiss David Warner over the last few years - he got him out 17 times in Test cricket.

🗓️ ICC Men’s 2023 Cricket World Cup Format
This section of our guide will deal with the format of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. There will be a total of ten teams participating, and all ten will be in one group - each team will play every other team once, meaning that there will be 45 games before the knockouts begin.
When the 45 matches have been played, the top four teams will make it through the final four. The team that wins the group will play the one that finishes in fourth, while the second place team will take on the third placed team. Then, the two winners will battle it out for the trophy.
If teams are tied on points, then how are they separated? Well, the first determining factor will be the Net Run Rate, which is a bit like goal difference in football, but a lot harder for the regular fans to work out. I will not go into details here, but the key concept is that the bigger the defeat, the worse a team's Net Run Rate will be. If teams finish with the same Net Run Rate, which is not likely to happen, then the final position is based on head-to-head results and then pre-tournament rankings.
🏆 Cricket World Cup Previous Winners
There have been 16 editions since the first World Cup took place in 1975, and only six teams have had their hands on the trophy. The previous winners and when they won the Cricket World Cup can be found in the table below:

Australia | 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 |
India | 1983, 2011 |
West Indies | 1975, 1979 |
England | 2019 |
Pakistan | 1992 |
Sri Lanka | 1996 |

📜Memorable Cricket World Cup Moments
Over the years the CWC has seen some fantastic moments that cricket fans will never forget, so let's have a look at some of the most memorable ones.
Heroics from Kapil Dev
The Cricket World Cup in 1983 ended up being a turning point for the Indian cricket team. India made it to the final, where they took on the West Indies, who many expected to win at a canter. India collapsed to 183 for 6, but Kapil Dev played a captain's innings and smashed 175 runs to give them a final score of 266. India won the match and the title, turning Dev into an instant legend in his homeland.
Heartbreak for South Africa
South Africans will not look back at the 1999 Cricket World Cup with much fondness. In a must-win game against the Aussies, the Springboks needed just one run from four balls with one wicket left. Lance Klusener and Allan Donald had an embarrassing mix up that led to a drawn match, but Australia went through thanks to their superior NRR.
The Dramatic Bowl Out
In the 2007 Group Stage, Pakistan and India faced off against each other, and the game ended in a draw. The rules at the time determined that a bowl out must be played to find out the winner of the match. In this dramatic spectacle, five bowlers from both teams had to hit the stumps. Two of the five Indian bowlers hit the stumps, while none of the Pakistani bowlers managed to do so. It really was one of the most dramatic ways to determine the winning team.
Ben Stokes Final Heroics
The 2019 Cricket World Cup final was one of the most dramatic matches that cricket fans will have ever seen. England headed into the last over of the match needing 15 runs to win the title, and Ben Stokes ensured that the match went to a Super Over by hitting a boundary from the last ball. Then, in the Super Over, the scores were level again after six balls, but England won the trophy due to the fact that they scored more boundaries in the match. Stokes showed remarkable resilience to see his side over the line, and he did the same in 2022 when England won the T20 World Cup.
