The thirteenth edition of the Paytm Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) is currently on, taking place from the 4th – 22nd November 2021. This year's edition of the tournament was originally scheduled for the 27th of October, however with just over one week difference from the new postponed date, it doesn’t seem to be too detrimental. The current defending champions are Tamil Nadu after their seven wicket victory over Baroda. However, these teams will have to wait to play against each other again as Tamil Nadu are placed into Elite Group A while Baroda are in Elite Group B.

Changes to the Format for 2021

Originally, the competing teams were divided into five groups, comprised of seven teams in Group A and B, and with eight teams in Groups C, D, and E. Recent changes in August sees the competing teams divided into six groups instead. There are now five Elite Groups with six teams and one Plate Group with eight teams. The five winners of the Elite group progress into the quarter-finals directly. The runners-up in the Elite Groups will play in the pre-quarter matches with the winner of the Plate Group.

What is the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

When compared to some of the other competitions that we talk about on this site, this one is quite young as the first edition was played during the 2009-10 cricket season. Just like with all T20 tournaments, this one has gone on to become very popular among local cricket fans.

What Format Has Been Used in This Cricket Competition?

From the 2009-10 edition up until the 2012-13 one, 27 teams from the Ranji Trophy were divided into five zones, with the teams that finished first and second qualifying for the knock-out rounds. In the 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 editions the knock-out stage was abolished, and a Super League took its place. In this league, the zone winners and runners-up were split into two groups and the winners met in the final. For the 2015-16 season, the competing teams were divided into four groups. For the 2016-17 edition, zonal teams participated in the Super League instead of just the zonal winners.

For the 2017-18 tournament, 10 teams were split into two groups of five and the winners of each group played each other in the finals for the right to be crowned champions. In the 2018-19 season, 37 teams were split into five groups and the top two from each group qualified for the Super League, which was made up of two groups of five. The winners from each group then met each other in the final.

In the 2019/2020 edition, the format was pretty much the same as that for the 2018/19 edition. However, instead of the top team from both Super League groups advancing to the final, the top two from each group advanced to the semi-finals, where the team that finished first in one group would play the team that finished second in the other.

In the 2020/21 season, the BCCI announced that the 38 teams would be split into six different groups. Groups A to E would be made up of six teams, while the Plate Group would have eight teams. The winners of each group advanced to the quarter-finals as well as the other two teams in Groups A-E with the most points. For the 2021-2022 season, the format changed slightly once again. There would still be six groups, with six teams in groups A to E and eight teams playing in the Plate Group. The winners of the Elite Groups advanced to the quarters, while the teams in second place and the Plate Group winner competed in pre-quarters to

determine the other final eight teams.
